21st Paradise Jazz Festival

Dear friends

We feel blessed to be able to share with you the announcement of the 21st Paradise Jazz Festival, which will be taking place on Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st of August 2021 at the beautiful venue of Val’s Place in the graphic village of Gialia, Paphos.

Press Release

The Paradise Place is proud to present the dates and programme of 4th Paradise Jazz Festival

The dates are Friday the 12th, Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of September 2003.

After a years break we are coming back with new ideas (don’t miss the other events at the Beach Café in Coral Bay)  & much more music with more groups (8), a big variety of different styles, (from the sound of the Hammond to classical line up jazz, from modified Cypriot songs to Samba & from modern jazz of the 50`s & the 60`s to funk, blues & boogie. LOVELY!  This 4th PJFestival has it all. But what is really new in this years programme is the approach to the local music scene, with the hope that this will be the beginning of a cultural exchange through music. Our goal is to bring together our local artists with the European scene, and to create more festive atmosphere.
We invite you all to support our efforts to establish an annual event, so we can all enjoy more & more live music.

There for, we open the first day with the Alter Ego, a young band that we discovered in Limassol. Alkis Agathogleous on guitar, Phideas Polystipiotis on acoustic bass & Alexander Bayraktarov on the drums. Classical jazz sounds will stimulate our senses for more to come…

The star of the day is coming next. The virtuoso jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock leads a classic jazz line up with Howard Simpson on trumpet, Sam Crockatt on tenor sax, Dave Mannington on bass, & Darren Altman on drums. Gwilym at the tender age of 22 appears regularly at Ronnie Scotts & the “606”, London’s top jazz venues.
We can’t wait.

Just after you have enjoyed watching the sun setting in the sea right in front of you, the party will begin. Juba on stage. A dynamic band, also from Limassol, that combines Blues, Funk, Jazz & Boogie will end, with the best way, the first day of the festival. The lucky ones that had the chance to enjoy them here in Paradise July’s 20th gig, they know exactly what we mean. Juba is an old African word for celebration. Extreme magazine called them “the adults of the revolution”. Georges Goulas on the drums, Irinaeos Koulouras on the bass, Giorgos Krasidis on saxophones, Mihalis Mihael on trumpet  & Philip Pearson on guitar & vocals.

For the 2nd day, Saturday, we start with The Metalaxis. Irinaeos Koulouras, (acoustic bass) & Evagoras Karagiorgis, (lout), modify Cypriot songs in jazz. The duo, that is been working many years on the subject & on this kind of transformations, they have acquired a great number of fans amongst those who appreciate creative experiments in music. This band will close the circle of local participation on this year’s festival. We really hope, that also in the future, we will have the chance to listen more of the islands music amongst the “imported” stars, & maybe one day we will see them together on stage…. (What is a man without a dream)?

And then, it doesn’t get more bluesy than this! The Reverend Whittaker recreates the sound of great Jimmy Smith on Hammond organ with Steve Buckley on guitar & Eryl Roberts on drums. A sensation at the last Paradise Jazz Festival they return to Cyprus & at Paradise Place. A chance for Hammond fans to hear live the only organ on the island..

Last, for Saturday night, the friendly diva of the festival Anita Wardel. A fabulous jazz voice. Well-known & much loved in Cyprus, she returns for her fourth tour on the island. With a newly released album, “Until the stars fade”, she is dominating the local scene in all the best London jazz clubs. From Ballad to Bebop, she sings with Simon Whiteside on piano, Darren Altman on drums, Dave Whitford on bass, Jamie O` Donnell on the alto-sax, a fantastic quartet, and many more specials quests.

On Sunday apart from the rest of the groups that we all ready mention the new comers on the festival is
a) The Jim Hart Quartetrecall the great Modern Jazz Quartet of the 50`s & 60`s. Vibraphone star Jim Hart reflects this most famous of all jazz quartets, and adds his own interpretations of the great jazz standards. With Simon Whiteside on piano, Dave Whitford on bass, Eryl Roberts on drums, plus quests Gareth Lockrane on flute & Tim Richards on baritone sax and
b) The Sirius B …Where jazz meets samba! Appearing this year at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival, they journey then to Cyprus to bring their mix of samba & bossa nova at the festival. So bring your dancing shoes! Azhar vocals, Joe (Ze) keyboards, Kevin Figers flute/sax, Felix Gibao percussion, Greg Cordez bass, & Paul Downers drums.

So let me count…30 musicians & 8 bands over 3 days. Can it be better? And all this for still a very good price: £8 for Friday, 8 for Saturday and £12 for Sunday. Special packet for all 3 days: £22!

Buffet for £5 a person and Bus service for Polis area & possible for Paphos to. (Information’s soon)

So let the good times   roll love……….See you soon…

Dear friends of Paradise Jazz Festival

We feel blessed to be able to share with you a Paradise Jazz Festival project, which will present 2 magical Music Nights, under the light of the full moon, on Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st of August 2021, at the beautiful venue of Val’s Place in the graphic village of Gialia, Paphos.

To be successfully achieved our 2 Music Nights, we adjust our venue according to the current rules and regulations of the Ministry of Health regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With regards to the above, there will be a limited number of numbered seats, without any tables and set up in line in an open-air amphitheatrically order with the appropriate distance between each group, in addition to safe-pass control at the ticket dispensary and entrance and the mandatory use of face masks at all necessary areas.

Since its establishment in 1999 PJFestival (which has the responsibility over the organization of these 2 Music Nights), has become a household name for music and profoundly jazz lovers all over the island and even internationally. Each year we take pride in presenting our unique selection of jazz melodies and uniting jazz lovers from all over the beautiful island of Cyprus in moments of harmony and happiness.
And this year for the purpose of the 2 Music Nights will be no exception! With the help and collaboration of our talented Cyprus Jazz Musicians, the amazing team of Val’s Place, and the generous support of our sponsors, we are sincerely looking forward to reconnecting with you through our mutual love and passion for music. With influences in Latin, modern or classic jazz, and even traditional Cypriot music we can guarantee to travel you worldwide through the eyes of music and culture.
Join us for a beautiful mid-summer weekend amidst the sea and the scenic hill of Gialia with astonishing views over some of the most majestic sunsets and accompanied by the best companion yet to be found- Notes of Jazz.

And our official program will birth on Friday night at 9.30pm with the jazz notes of “Jazzologia Cyprus Big Band”. Their repertoire consists of historic compositions and arrangements by the pioneers of Jazz Big Band music as well as authentic pieces influenced by traditional Cypriot musical themes and songs orchestrated by internationally renowned composer and orchestrator Aris Antoniadis, specially written for the Jazzologia Cyprus Big Band.
The orchestra was created in October 2016 by renowned saxophonist George Krasidis.
The whole project is a collective, voluntary effort of sixteen great musicians having as a common characteristic their love for jazz music and, more specifically, for jazz big band. See all the participators at J. B. B
The Band has been known for participating in a number of festivals and performances in Cyprus, such as the European Capital of Culture Pafos 2017, the Jazz Encounters, the Old Port Jazz Festival 2017, the "Jazzologia at Pattichio Theatre 2018", the Faneromeni 2019, the Summer Concerts in Cyprus, Technopolis 20, Kypria Festival 2020 and the Rialto 7th Jazz and World Music Showcase. Let`s welcome them on their first appearance at a PjFestival project.

The next go belongs to another first appearance project on PjFestival, and is the “Electrified Riffs”. The quartet was formed in 2015 by the brothers Andreas Yerolatsitis (electric guitar) and Christos Yerolatsitis (keyboards). Their music can be characterized as eclectic Jazz, a mosaic of electronic sounds, rock grooves, jazz harmonies, and spontaneous improvisations. The two musicians are lining up on stage together with Andreas Rodosthenοus on bass and Andreas Stefanou on drums.

And last for Friday night we have the coming back of our familiar Macumba. Born in Cyprus, this excellent band moves towards Latin jazz and world music directions and paths. The collaboration between Chilean bassist Rodrigo Cáceres and Rodos Panayiotou, Giorgos Morfitis, and Elias Ioannou brings a new air to the music scene of the island. Afro Cuban and Brazilian rhythms and colors get blended through a modern jazz aesthetic and the result is recorded in the album Como Jugando which was released in 2019.
Macumba have presented their frenzy dance jazz music in various festivals and concert grounds with great success. For the upcoming performance, they will be collaborating with renowned musician Giorgos Koulas. What a great way to complete our Friday night`s program.

On Saturday 9.30pm we start our official program by going back in time with the help of the Workin' Trio, a band that was formed in 2020. Their music is inspired by uplifting swing grooves at times blended with Gospel, New Orleans, and Boogaloo rhythms. The combination of the organ, tenor saxophone, and drums creates a unique sound. The focus of the trio is to unbury the less-known repertoire from the 40s, 50s, and 60s as well as to compose original tunes along the same lines. Now with the addition of the second tenor, the band will also perform tunes made famous by the tradition of the tenor sax battles. The trio consisted of Charis Ioannou on saxophone, Christos Yerolatsitis on organ, and Marios Spirou on drums. On Saturday 21st of August, they will have as second tenor sax the talented Marios Charalambous.

The next visit on Saturday night is from The Visitors. The band was initially accomplished as a trio by Christos Yerolatsitis on keys, Andreas Rodosthenοus on electric bass, Giorgos Koulas on drums, and recently by Giorgos Krasidis addition on saxophones as ‘visitor’ transformed to a quartet, and acquired its final name: The Visitors.
Besides the original compositions, they perform pieces from well-known composers of funk and jazz, like Herbie Hancock, Woody Herman, etc.
The target is to create an atmosphere where all musicians and the audience have a great time.
We personally (the organizing team) agree 100% with that point and we are longing to sharing nights like this with you! Join us!

The night and the festival will end with one more of these famous Jam Sessions from all of Cyprus Jazz Musicians who will be around, to celebrate with us this wonderful jazz meeting.
We thank them all, musicians, our fantastic audience, and our sponsors who without their psychological help and financial contribution in these difficult times, our events would no longer exist.

Another great-great thank you goes to all volunteers who each one of them is helping us with their own way to organize this event in its finest way. Their help is touching our hearts and is boosting our creativity.
