13th Press Release
Dear Friends of Paradise Jazz Festival!
We are very proud to announce the 13th Paradise Jazz Festival which is going to take place on Friday 27th / Saturday 28th, July & Friday 3rd / Saturday 4th August 2012 at Paradise Place in Pomos, Pafos. Two consecutive Weekends full of carefully selected jazz music, where 6 bands and 23 international musicians will perform on our recently renovated stage. Before all, we would like to thank our fans and music lovers for their constant support and for sharing our joy from organizing this yearly and landmark event for Cyprus. We are constantly trying to improve the quality of the festival and to raise the standards by presenting more & more renowned artists.
The festival begins its music celebration in the most dynamic way: on Friday 27th of July, at 9.30 pm with the ‘Some Other Messengers 6tet’. Influenced by the rhythm blues and soul routed sounds of Art Blakey’s Messengers, the music of Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, and the Miles Davis Quintet to name a few. The sextet elaborates repertoire from landmark recordings of the hard bop medium. Led by vibraphonist Alexander Gagatsis, this not to be missed lineup features Tasos Stylianou on guitar, Ioannis Vafeas on the drums, Charis Ioannou on alto sax, Mike Michael on trumpet, and Greg Makamian on double bass. Late-night Jam Session to follow. €10 the night.
Our next group, the ‘PLEX 4tet’, a band put together by Stelios Xydias (graduate from Rotterdam Conservatory in 2011), will perform on Saturday the 28th time 9.30 pm. The band is newly formed by musicians who share a similar interest in music. All four of them met and studied together in Rotterdam. They play mostly original jazz compositions influenced by the jazz repertoire and the modern music of our time. The band members are Tom Lumley on saxophone, Ermis Michael on guitar, Thomas Poll on acoustic bass, and Stelios Xydias on drums.
The first`s weekend program will conclude with a familiar band at Paradise Place, The Trio Smiles, who this year together with Charis Ioannou on alto sax decides to dedicate their focus to Wes Montgomery. There are many sides to the great artist phenomenon Wes Montgomery. He was not only one of the jazz guitar greats, celebrating the tradition of the instrument but also taking it further to open new ways for the future, he was apart from that a great improviser always searching and finding the best available notes and melodies satisfying any audience and musicians. Wes wrote many great compositions with some of them becoming standards in the jazz world and since the ’60s been performed massively. In the few years of his recorded career (1957-1968) managed to play in various group formats and styles and with a diverse pallet of artists. From smoky organ, and blues to swing classics, Latin grooves, orchestra, and pop covers he managed to put always his stamp and never separate music into styles and categories-just played the best he could unconditionally. Finally being the master of a not common thumb technic showed the world that anything can be done!!! Trio Smiles consists of Rodos Panagiotou on drums, Andreas Rodosthenous on electric bass, and Stelios Papazoglou on guitar.
The following Friday 3rd of August, at 9 pm, the beginning belongs to Pantelis Stoikos from Salonika Greece & his ‘Trio Balkano‘. Pantelis is one of the most creative trumpet players in the modern world jazz scenery from the area of the Balkans. He concentrates on the sound colors of his area, Macedonia, extended them with a technical mentality from jazz & classical music. He is currently working with the very well-known ‘Florina`s Brass Band’ amongst a big variety of groups & artists from the area of traditional music, jazz, improvisation, modern, etc. From the duet ‘Improvisation In Balkan’ came the ‘Trio Balkano’ with Lakis Tzimkas on bass and Alekos Papadopoulos on drums. The band extends creatively the limitations of traditional music and gets into the area of modern jazz, keeping their own original musical identity. Later the night will follow a Jam Session. €10 the night.
On Saturday 4th of August time 9 pm, we will start with the company of ‘Koullouras 4rtet’. They drive their music and their original compositions to new horizons with new acoustics, mixing with a lot of styles and new modern elements with traditional forms in a way that derives from other kinds such as jazz, ethnic, etc. Members of the band are Irinaeos Koullouras on d. bass, George Krasides on saxophone, Ioannis Vafeas on drums, and George Morfitis on keyboards.
And the official program of the 13th PJFestival will end with Theodosii Spassov who is one of the most important names in the European music scene. Theodosii has developed his own unique style of playing the kaval, an eight-hole wooden “shepherd” flute that is one of the oldest instruments in Europe by synthesizing traditional folklore with jazz, fusion, and classical music. For over 20 years, Theodosii has toured all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Canada, and United States. Amongst other distinctions, was awarded a Grammy award for “Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares” in 1994. He is also one of the most favorite artists here at Paradise Place and his appearance at our 2005 festival will stay unforgettable wherewith his pure good energy performance and his natural talent he commended our event! We feel very proud that we will have him back with us! This year he will travel to Cyprus with Miroslav Turiyski on keyboards, Aleksandar Lekov on d. bass, and Nacho Gospodinov on drums. Theodosii is on kaval and vocals. €15 the night.
We just can`t wait to share with you the joy of a beautiful musical communication of such standards!
