10th Press Release
Dear friends of Paradise Jazz Festival!!
We are proud to announce that the 10th Paradise Jazz Festival is going to be held at its usual scenic venue just before Pomos at Paradise Place over an exciting and unforgettable three weekends from Saturday 18th July to Saturday 1st of August 2009. The subject of this year’s festival is once again the musical culture of the island. We aim to create a musical platform for talented local musicians to present their work. That’s why we chose a fresh program with new artists and groups, instead of a tribute to past years for our 10th-anniversary celebration. Some faces we know from previous performances here at previous events, but this year they are moving in different groups and flying in different directions. On our journey to collect what is best, we ended up with far too many groups that we could squeeze into a weekend… So, this is where the idea of 3 weekends on the road came…..
A “Latin, Samba Jazz Night” with a familiar band Trio Smiles with their huge fan base to start on Saturday 18th as a pre-start gig, to open the Jazz-times of 2009. Their music travels beyond geographical barriers and takes the people with them into their musical common language. Stelios Papazoglou is on guitar, Rodos Panayiotou on the drums, and Andreas Rodosthenous on the electric bass.
The following weekend 24th, 25th & 26th is the main part of our festival, starting on Friday 24th, with the excellent new work of Savvas Houvartas and his Ensemble, a seven-member band is a project that is being recorded at the moment. During the concert, we are going to hear only original compositions (instrumentals and some Greek lyrics. Mediterranean melodies and strong elements of improvisations from the musicians, who, with their style complete the sound of their performance. Savvas Houvartas on guitar & vocals, Alkis Agathokleous on ney, Giorgos Koulas on drums, Andreas Rodosthenous on bass, and special quest Pavlina Konstantopoulou on vocals.
On Saturday 25th we will have 2 bands. One is a uniquely talented group called GoJam Group from Greece that will appear for the first time in Cyprus. We, the organizers, checking their website on My Space fell in love with their music which fits perfectly with our location. A young pleasant group that is always on their live performances they create a special atmosphere with their virtuoso technical play & the transmitting enthusiasm performance. The night starts perfect for things to follow.
The second band is The Takoushis / Karapatakis Quartet, a fantastic lineup with some of the island’s best artists. The sophisticated and colorful compositions of Marios Takoushis together with his charismatic style of playing and his incredible ability to improvise, meet the music of Gabriel Karapatakis who with his sparse and unique expressiveness, takes us to soundscapes with minimal but groovy bass lines. According to their latest performances and reviews, the four musicians leave their stigma on the island’s jazz scene and can disclaim the fact that jazz is music for musicians only.
On Sunday 26th, we have Classical Jazz Afternoon. One of the most well-known local musicians, Irinaeos Koullouras, is presenting a quartet of magnificent musicians who are visiting the island special for our festival and for sure this will be the highlight of this year’s music celebration. “The Meeting Point Jazz Quartet” will promise you an unforgettable late Sunday Afternoon. The two old friends, Ofer Ganor on guitar and Irinaeos Koullouras on acoustic bass, met back in 1994 in Boston and New York and since then they perform together on several occasions and places around the world with several musicians in the jazz scene. This time they come together again to join forces with two other great musicians of their generation, Asaf Yuria on tenor saxophone and Doron Tivosh on drums. “The Meeting Point Jazz Quartet” will present compositions from the jazz repertoire along with some compositions of their own. Special guest on vocals Ioanna Troullidou.
Ending this musical celebration on Saturday 1st of August is the “European Trio and Jan Kus” also a newcomer to our festival. The Trio is formed by piano player Andreas Panteli, bass player Andreas Rhodosthenous, and Stelios Xydias on the drums and was created in 2008. When the band first played together they immediately saw a connection between them and a clear direction of musical style and color. Andreas Rodosthenous on the electric bass has a unique style and sound that blends with piano player Andreas Panteli in an attempt of creating interactive music that can escape from “harmonical borders”. Stelios Xydias‘s touch on the drums comes to complete the band’s sound and rhythmically interactive direction. They are heavily influenced by Modern Jazz (Brad Mehldau, Wayne Shorter) and European Music (Keith Jarrett European Quartet), and so their approach comes from a fusion of these styles. For this concert, the Trio becomes a Quartet with the addition of Slovenian saxophone player Jan Kus.
One of the big surprises of this year’s Festival is the dancing act, which takes place before the last gig. The Point to Performances is researching contemporary forms of theater, which leads the audience to a real experience. The theme of the play is an observing look at the relationship between couples today. Sounds good to me!!!
Thank you! …
Relax, chill-out, kick off your shoes, sip on a long refreshing drink, and enjoy the company of staff, after all, you are in Paradise. The Place is unique. Situated in Pomos, in the north-western corner of Cyprus, the area blessed with a wonderful dramatic rocky coastline and villages where time is still valued. The building is delightfully quirky in character: but then, it is the home of the famous Paradise Jazz Festival.
Since its establishment in 1999, Paradise Jazz Festival has become a household name for music and profoundly jazz lovers all over the island and even internationally. Each year we take pride in presenting our unique selection of jazz melodies and uniting jazz lovers from all over the beautiful island of Cyprus in moments of harmony and happiness.
We thank them all, musicians, our fantastic audience, and our sponsors who without their psychological help and financial contribution in these difficult times, our events would no longer exist.
Another great-great thank you goes to all volunteers who each one of them is helping us with their own way to organize this event in its finest way. Their help is touching our hearts and is boosting our creativity.
